Fractional CEO vs Interim CEO: What's the Difference?
Both bring an experienced chief executive into your business without a permanent hire. The difference is how much time they give, how long they stay and what they are there to do.

The short answer
A fractional CEO works part-time, usually one to three days a week, on an ongoing basis. An interim CEO works full-time for a fixed period, usually three to twelve months, to cover a gap or lead through a specific event.
Side-by-side comparison
- Time: fractional is part-time; interim is full-time.
- Length: fractional is open-ended on a rolling retainer; interim has a set end date.
- Typical reason: fractional suits growing businesses that need senior leadership but not five days a week; interim suits a sudden departure, a crisis, a turnaround or a sale.
- Cost: fractional is a monthly retainer for the days agreed; interim is usually a full-time day rate for the length of the assignment.
- Outcome: fractional builds the business over time; interim stabilises it and hands over to a permanent CEO.
When a fractional CEO is the right choice
- The founder wants to step back from running the business day to day.
- The business is growing but can't yet justify a full-time chief executive.
- An investor wants experienced leadership across a portfolio company.
- You are preparing for growth, fundraising or an exit over the next one to three years.
When an interim CEO is the right choice
- Your CEO has left suddenly and the business needs someone in the seat full-time.
- The business is in difficulty and needs a turnaround now.
- A sale, merger or major restructure needs full-time leadership until it completes.
Can one become the other?
Yes. Interim assignments often step down to a fractional role once things are stable, and fractional roles can step up to interim during a critical period. The best arrangements agree this flexibility at the start.
